Remus and Romulus

Gracchus bros = they were always trying to help the poor.
The poor would sell their land to the rich, because their husbands were at war and they couldn't pay the bills.
Solution: Rich are rich, so why not give some of the land to the poor.
Senators veto, the bros won.
The senators killed one of the bros, the law was over turned.
Latinfundia = when u are fighting for a good investment.

Punic Wars -
250 B.C. all of Italy south of the Rive Po. = Roman hands v.s Carthage: north coast of Africa
Carthage: oligarchic and empire-building republic similar to Rome. They were interested in Sicily v.s Romans
Stake: Command of the whole western Mediterranean.
Punic wars; waged on land and sea in 3 rounds between 264 and 146 B.C.
1st: Rome won
2nd: Rome won: Hannibal was involved. The loyalty of the Roman allies, they were able to draw citizens and allied soldiers from all of Italy. While Carthage relied on smaller mercenary armies. end of the war: 202 B.C.
3rd: Rome won. In 146 B.C. the senate ordered for Carthage to be leveled and ppl sold into slavery. This was only an epilogue because in 202 B.C.  Rome had won control of the western Mediterranean.
