Egypt

Political and sectional conflicts usually did not break country's unity
Egyptian civ. more stable than Mesopotamia
Egypt divided = "Two lands" -Upper Egypt ~ fertile land -Lower Egypt ~ waterways
3100 B.C. = unified ruled by Pharaohs

Government by a God-King:
Stability and harmony of state = part of stability and harmony of universe as whole > MAAT

Tending the cattle of God:
Society under Pharaoh

Men and Women under the Pharaohs:
Mother and wife = "touch of divinity"
Pharaohs had many wives
Hateshepsut = reigned as king shortly after 1500

Gods, Humans and Everlasting Life:
Deities = originally connived in form of animals
Egyptian polytheism always had an underlying urge to monotheism
They always hoped for immortality
Believed supernatural life soul after body died

Pyramid and Temples:
Pyramid - massive structure with sloping sides that met an apex used as royal tomb in ancient Egypt
Biggest = King Kufu near Giza
Great Sphinx = Khafre
Temple - Amon at Karnak *largest

Writing of the Words of God:
hieroglyphs = earliest Egyptian writing in which pictures stood for whole words or separate sounds of words
Hieratic = priestly script
Demotic = priestly script

Calendars and Sail boats:
If you were sick = demons caused it

Rhythm of Egypt's History:
Upsets by = weakling pharaoh's, boy pharaoh's and disputes over succession
3,000 yrs. = > 30 dynasties ruled Egypt
Semitic tribes known as Hyksos = Lower Egypt
525 B.C. Egypt became a province of Persia Empire
333 B.C. Ruled by Greeks
30 B.C. Ruled by Romans
